High: Great fun, bright beautiful colors (for its time), and a quick play. Awesome replay value.

Low: Once you get the controls down the game becomes too easy. Lacks a final boss fight with Bowser.

Classic. The one word I can think of when I think of this game. This quite possibly could be most gamers very first game they played. Mario and Luigi brought video games to life when they appeared on the original Nintendo back in 1985. With only the power to jump really high and eat a flower for fireballs, which is pretty cool, Mario chases the evil Bowser across many levels with the objective of saving the captured Princess. There seems to be a pattern in all Mario games, Bowser likes to capture little girls a lot. Er, anyway, Mario must trek through many different worlds that consist of swimming and of course jumping like crazy. Remember, this is original made in 1985, so I'm going to pretend like it is 1985 and rate it fairly.

The gameplay is probably the most simple button configuration on any game to date. Press the A (or 2 button if playing on the Wii Remote) to jump and the B button (1) to run fast and shoot your fireballs. The only difficult thing about this game is dodging all the enemies and obstacles, and once you get the hang of the simple controls its almost too easy. Let me say, that it isn't hard to get used to these controls either, I'll give you about fifteen minutes max before you will be running around like a crazy plumber. Once you get past level 4 the difficult does seem to go up but if you are just dashing through the worlds jumping over everything without even thinking about coins it does seem a little easier. The gameplay in this game is simple, and so is the difficulty. You will have fun trying to find the princess in every single castle in the game.

Visually the game was beautiful in 1985. Nowadays the game still looks colorful and exciting, but of course the graphics are outdated. The worlds tend too follow the same pattern, beautiful green hills and blue skies on the first part of the world, then underground tunnels, then a dungeon but all and all the different levels still are appealing. Mario and Luigi are decked out in their special plumber outfits, and Bowser looks just as evil in this game as he does in any of the newer versions of Mario. The sound quality is still great, no weird clips or chips. The effects still seem like they should be there, the
*bling* sound when you get a coin, the growing sound when you grab a mushroom and the sound of a dieing koopaoh so great. The castle music is by far the most fitting of any of the levels, but of course, nobody will forget the sound of that first level, the classic Mario jingle.

All and all this game still has it. Great fun for the whole family, but maybe a little too easy at times. I would suggest downloading this game from the Wii Virtual Console store just because it was the game that started it all. The only thing that this game is lacking, which might not have been in its time, is a co-operative 2-player mode instead of a versus mode. The difficulty could have been tougher, maybe actually fighting Bowser at the end instead of knocking the bridge away. Either way, download this game, its worth it.
